Typically, the metal sheet is shaped like a spiral to increase the temperature measurement’s sensitivity. The spiral coil rolls up or loosens as a result of variations in the temperature of the multi-layer metal sheet, which affects how much each layer of metal expands or contracts. Given that one end of the spiral coil is fixed and the other end is attached to a freely rotating pointer, when the bimetallic piece feels a temperature change, the pointer can indicate the temperature on a circular graduation scale.
